Reviews
Mine: Maybe the best movie musical ever. Great music, great acting, some of Gene best dancing, all tied together with a terrific, funny and touching story. When they say "they don't make them like this anymore", remember they never did! Just this one.
Leonard Maltin/Plot synopsis: Perhaps the greatest movie musical of all time, fashioned by Betty Comden and Adolph Green from a catalogue of Arthur Freed-Nacio Herb Brown songs. The setting is Hollywood during the transition to talkies, with Hagen giving the performance of a lifetime as Kelly's silent screen costar, whose voice could shatter glass. Kelly's title number, O'Connor's ``Make 'Em Laugh,'' are just two highlights in a film packed with gems. Later a Broadway musical.

A favorite of movie musical lovers everywhere, fun, and full of music.

Absolutely the best film musical, though for my money the film takes a huge leap off the rails during the 'movie pitch' sequence late in the film. What might be dazzling on its own comes across as a much too formalized and pace-killing departure that, frankly, I skip when I rewatch the film on DVD.
