Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:

Best known for his role as brash, womanizing Sam Malone on TV's "Cheers" (which won him an Emmy Award for the 1989-90 season, and another for 1992-93), this imposing actor worked hard in his movie career to overcome his TV typecasting as a callous hunk. The son of an archaeologist, Danson spent two years at Stanford University, where he "drifted into acting." Moving to New York City, he found work in commercials and soap operas, and met future wife Casey, at an EST seminar. Danson made his New York stage debut in 1972's "The Real Inspector Hound." His first film role, in The Onion Field came in 1979-the same year his wife suffered a paralyzing stroke while giving birth to their daughter, Kate. Three years of caring for wife and child put Danson's career on hold, but in 1981, after Casey's recovery, he appeared as a District Attorney in Lawrence Kasdan's steamy thriller Body Heat just before landing the part of Sam on "Cheers."

Danson also portrayed an incestuous father in the 1984 TV drama Something About Amelia and went on to appear in such films as 3 Men and a Baby (1987, as one of three bachelors entrusted with an infant, based on a French farce), Cousins (1989, an enjoyable, Americanized version of the French hit Cousin, Cousine Dad (1989, as a preoccupied yuppie who rehabilitates himself while caring for ailing father Jack Lemmon), and 3 Men and a Little Lady (1990's sequel to his 1987 hit). He's also appeared in Creepshow (1982), Little Treasure (1985), and the abysmal alleged comedy A Fine Mess (1986), redeeming himself with an expert, moving performance in Just Between Friends (1986). Most recently he starred with Whoopi Goldberg in the dopey comedy Made in America (1993). An active environmentalist, Danson founded the American Ocean's Campaign in 1987.
