Biography

Biography from Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia:

Actor. (b. Aug. 28, 1957, Bethesda, Md.) The 1990s could be Daniel Stern's decade, judging from his high-profile appearances in the megahits Home Alone (1990, as one of the bumbling burglars trounced by young Macaulay Culkin) and City Slickers (1991, as a depressed, ineffectual grocery-store manager regenerated during a cattle drive). The likable Stern may not be leading-man material but rates high on the list of able supporting players of the babyboom generation. Debuting as one of the young friends in the sleeper hit Breaking Away (1979), Stern enjoyed his first real success in Diner (1982), giving a particularly layered, complex performance as the sole married man in a group of 1950s-era buddies. He has labored in several mediocre films (such as the silly 1984 horror flick C.H.U.D for example), alternating with prestige productions such as Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters (1986). Other credits for this prolific actor include Starting Over (1979), It's My Turn, OneTrick Pony, A Small Circle of Friends, Stardust Memories (all 1980), Honky Tonk Freeway (1981), I'm Dancing as Fast as I Can (1982), Get Crazy, Blue Thunder (both 1983), the Tim Burton short Frankenweenie (1984), Key Exchange (1985), The Boss' Wife (1986), Born in East L.A (1987), The Milagro Beanfield War (1988), Leviathan, Little Monsters (both 1989), My Blue Heaven and Coupe de Ville (both 1990). He reprised his familiar role of the hapless burglar Marv in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1992). Stern also provided the narration for the thosewere-the-days sitcom "The Wonder Years" (1988-93) and directed episodes of the popular show, as a warmup to directing his first feature, the amiable Rookie of the Year (1993, in which he also played a broadly comic supporting role). In 1994 he rejoined Billy Crystal in City SlickersII: The Legend of Curly's Gold
